Hebrew Language Enrichment Program for Arab Schools delivers one hour a week of spoken Hebrew to Arab students in grades 7 – 9. The classes are taught by Jewish instructors who are native speakers of Hebrew and act as cultural ambassadors, working in cooperation with the school’s Hebrew teachers and offering what for most children is their first and only opportunity for an ongoing relationship with someone Jewish. The program utilizes a specially developed online curriculum, which focuses on cultural integration and preparation for integration in higher studies and the workplace, while maximizing student engagement and incremental success. The instructors receive significant in-service training and support, both for effective teaching and for facilitating the intercultural encounter that their presence in the schools engenders. Following the successful pilot implementation, the Ministry of Education is backing expansion of the program nationwide.
